Keracare Product Review and mini haul

Posted in African American Hair, Grow Hair, Haul, Product Review, Products, black hair with tags , , , , , on October 18, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

Can somebody say SALE!?! I have been reading a lot online about Keracare products. I first heard of Keracare while watching video tutorials by Macherieamour. I recently heard about Keracare again from Ateya (on Youtube) as well as a few other blogs. Keep in mind I am tight on money so some expensive products  I steer clear of…..That being said, I read on Healthy Textures where people found Keracare at their local JCPenny salon, others mentioned seeing it at the Walmart salons…So I went on a hunt. I figured I would try the products out, worse case scenario would be if I didn’t like them, I could send them to my cousin (she swears by Biosilk but wouldn’t dare turn down free-bees). I went to my local Walmart salon and was disappointed because all they had was the styling gel. I don’t wear gel so there was no chance of me buying it just because it was Keracare. I asked the store clerk and she said that since they would now be carrying Mizani, they would no longer be carrying Keracare. So I assume that means they can only carry one product line geared towards women of color at a time?? LAME….anyway, so I moved on to JCPenny…I was astounded to find a majority of the products that I wanted to try along with the fact that the oil sheen and conditioning creme head dress was only $1.99 (limit 3 per customer). Since I can’t pass up a deal, I grabbed a few products and headed home. My first wash day using the products, I was a little heavy handed and my hair felt gritty and coated. I was unhappy at first but realized I needed to try it again. It was relaxer day the following week and after my relaxer, I followed up with my Keracare products. I was amazed. My hair looked, smelled and felt great. I washed again yesterday and I am getting the hang of it. I am planning to start alternating between this and my s2s. I realized that I am using products to heavy, its become a habit. Using cheaper products like Suave for cowashing forces me to use more to feel like I am getting the full benefit of the product. Keracare has taught me a lot!

Also, just a quick side note: I watched Ateya use chi silk on wet hair before drying. I have added this to my regimen and the shine is unbelievable. I know people say there are a lot of cones in chi and keracare products but I am ok with it…You can’t expect perfection from hair products…

Products Purchased: Keracare Moisturizing Shampoo, Keracare humecto conditioner, Keracare Foam wrap-set lotion, Keracare Oil sheen with Humidity blocker and Keracare conditioning head dress

To buy next: Keracare Silken Seal, Keracare leave in conditioner

October length check!! BSL

Posted in African American Hair, Grow Hair, Hair Pictures, black hair with tags , , , , , on October 4, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

So I did a length check..mind you I have some new growth and I had to stretch but I am finally BSL! I heard recently on another blog that BSL (bra-strap length) is no longer a respectable term because different bras fit differently and some people wear their bras low-slung and some higher than others. The new form of measure is bsb (below shoulder blade) which I fit too….Yay! Anyway, I just thought I would share with anyone who is willing to read this!!! :-)

Also, I am seriously thinking about trimming my ends for a blunt look with this weeks wash and d/c. And I am also leaning towards a fringe or bangs…..Somebody stop me!

Hair today…gone tomorrow

Don’t let the title fool you. I am not talking about chopping off my hair….I am talking about how it makes me feel to sit down and hook my Mom’s hair up only to find it disheveled and a hot mess the next day. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t have an issue with a few flattened areas here and there. My problem is the whole hairstyle being unrecognizable the next day. I love my Mom and would do anything for her but she has to find a way to sleep on her hairdo without losing the sizzle.

I can remember sleeping on my arms night after night to “keep” my hair looking good for the week. Now days, I mostly pin curl or cross wrap my hair so really it doesn’t matter how I sleep. Today, I am putting my money where my mouth is..I am going to find her a satin or silk pillowcase. You wild sleepers better consider buying one too or you might soon find out YOUR hairstylist is blogging about you too!

***Update***  She actually managed to keep the style overnight this time….I think she can read the disdain on my face when I see her and ask “What happened to your hair?”. Lord, please humble me…..

****UPDATE**** I found satin pillow cases at Target for $9.99 for a package of two! Woo hoo.

Just one of those days….

Posted in African American Hair with tags , , , on September 4, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

Have you ever had just one of those days???

1. A day when you feel especially cute…that was me yesterday, make up on point, hair just right…eyebrows freshly waxed..nails freshly done….look out now!!!

2. Bummy, scummy….haven’t showered…hair a mess…brows bushy…..that was me earlier in the day yesterday

I have decided to start sprucing up more often. I can’t just lay around looking like a bum, even if I feel bad. My husband loves me regardless of what I look like but what’s wrong with giving him some eye candy once and a while?? To Adam, Eve was the most beautiful woman in the world…Ok she was the only woman but I bet she was still fierce!!

So my message to all you ladies out there…WORK WHAT YA GOT!!! Make it fierce and gorgeous every time! :-)

Crunchy Curls….

Posted in African American Hair, Hair Pictures, black hair, hair style with tags , , , , , , on September 3, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

I went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago so before I left, I went to my Dominican salon for a wash and set. I decided on spiral curls….Well, for the curls to stay they had to fill me up with product. I’m not sure exactly what they put in my hair but I do know they used some mousse. Not sure of the brand but I could hear the spray nozzle when she applied it. Anyway, the best thing about the style is before roller setting my stylist asked me what size curls I wanted (showing me all the sizes in the roller tray) and she asked how I wanted the curls to fall. I told her and she did exactly what I wanted. The style was adorable and I got several compliments on it…Unfortunately, it was a rainy day and by the time I went to the nail shop and got to the airport, my curls drooped a little. By the next day I had to comb out my curls and re-curl with a curling iron. I’m not sure where I went wrong?? The curls were hard and crunchy so I figured they wouldn’t go anywhere. I was wrong!!! The good news is that I was able to put some chi silk infusion on my hair and comb the curls out. My hair immediately turned bouncy and easy to manage and the hardness and crunchiness went away. I’m not sure what type of mousse that was but I am definitely going to find out! As an added bonus, whatever it was smelled super good…

Time to get SERIOUS about hair!!!

Posted in African American Hair, Grow Hair, black hair with tags , , , on September 2, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

Ok, so I know I am not the best blogger in the world but I am vowing to do better. I don’t exactly have a cult following but enough people seem interested in what I am doing with my hair. So…I talked to my husband and at some point he’ll be getting me a domain and site up and running. I plan to post videos and blog more often. I am striving for waistlength and hope to be there in the next year and a half. I have been watching You Tube videos of Lorrainetips and Ateyaaa (and others) and I see this is a service that is in high demand. I’m no hair expert but I have researched so much and am happy to share my knowledge and experiences with anyone who has found themselves in a “hair-growing rut”. So, that being said………Time to get SERIOUS about hair!!! Oh yeah…and I am happy to take requests so bring it on!!!! :-)

Quick Hair Update!!

Posted in African American Hair, Grow Hair, Tools, black hair with tags , , , on August 2, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

I finally got my S2S in the mail. No fault of anyone but myself ( I took forever to sit down and order)….Anyway, I also relaxed yesterday and followed up with S2S products. My hair is so happy!! Also, I am grazing bsl so I am a little happier than my last post. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to not worry about my length. The longer my hair seems to get, the longer I want it to be! I am also contemplating buying satin pillowcases. I have a bunch of decorative pillows on my bed so I am thinking I will just get a separate pillow and pillow case that I will just use for sleeping. I have a satin bonnet but for some reason, lately I can’t keep the bonnet on. It gets hot and muggy when it gets closer to sunrise (we sleep with the windows open most nights)….OK, enough rambling. I hope to post some updated pics to my album regarding August updates soon.

On a sidenote. Some fabulous ladies on youtube have posted videos about hair care, hair regimens etc. It’s so excited to see ladies on the path to healthy hair. For any of you who run past this blog….keep up the good work and keep posting those vids!! Also, using some techniques in some vids on youtube, I am able to create beautiful beachy hair waves with a clampless iron! I’ve got it almost down to a science. Clampless Iron’s are very expensive (I’m cheap so anything over $20 is expensive to me) so I bought a cheap iron for $8 at Big Lots and removed the screws and clamps myself. Works like a charm and super cheap. Don’t forget thermal heat protectant when curling!!!

Tootles!!! :-)

Are we there yet???

So here I am….It’s nearly July and I find myself filled with disappointment and angst. Why? Because I should be BSL by now. I like others, get so wrapped up in length. I hit all of my major goals right on time so what’s different. I have examined my diet, my water intake, my sleeping habits. I’ve come to the realization that my lack of water intake and crazy diet have directly contributed in a lack of hair growth. At 8 weeks post, I clearly do not have the same amount of waves that I normally do and I still appear to have another full inch to grow before I can claim bsl. It’s so difficult to stay the path. I keep telling myself its all worth it. I’m sitting here at my PC right this moment with a deep condish so I am somewhat calm because right now at this very moment, I feel my hair is getting the VIP treatment. I only hope I can get my hair back on track. I have been using Dominican products lately and I think its time for me to go back to my roots….S2S here I come and not a minute to soon!!!!

SPRING REVIEW!!!!

Posted in Health, Product Review, Products, Tools with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 19, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

It’s time for Mrs Raines spring review! Over the last month or so, I have been trying new items. Some items are hair related and others skin related or body related. Some items were purchased, some I received as gifts and others I just couldn’t resist ads or walking past them in the stores. Either way, I have tried some great products and others that didn’t stand up to their advertisements.

First up….The Ped Egg. Now I know you’ve either seen ads on TV or you’ve walked past this thing in the store. It looks like a egg mixed with a cheese grader. It’s cool because you can literally use the Ped Egg anywhere. the cheese grater scrapes dead, dry, scaly, cracked skin off the bottom of your feet and turns it into little particles of dust. Those particles are trapped in the bottom of the Ped Egg and you unclasp and dispose. This makes a great gift, retailing for only $9.99. You can also buy extra cheese grater attachments. My only issue with the Ped Egg is that if you flip it over, all those little skin flakes fall all over the place. Other than that minor detail my feet are super soft and instead of paying for a pedicure ($20+), I only have to pay for a color change ($5). This is already saving me money because this item has paid for itself already!!

A few years ago, people we’re heavy into Mac makeup. Everyone wanted the “flawless” look. Right now mineral makeup is in fashion, however, I am a few years behind schedule. My cousin tried Mac makeup and it ended up being too dark or too light depending on her tan and overall skin tone…since I live in Florida, I am almost always tan. Therefore, while visiting, I took the Mac off her hands. It’s usually very expensive and only sold in high end department stores. It’s a perfect match. It goes on smooth and lasts all day. The only drawback here is the price. I decided to wear my cheap drug-store makeup on most days and wear my newly acquired Mac on special occasions. Yes, I am turning into my Grandmother with my “special occasion” stuff….With the price of gas going up…being like Grandma isn’t such a bad idea.

Speaking of expensive….I priced Chi flat irons a couple of weeks ago. Chi flat irons retail for around $100. I would rather spend that type of money on a salon quality dryer so I will be content with roller sets and saran wraps for now. However, that being said, I recently purchased Chi Silk Infusion as well as the Thermal Heat Protectant (Iron Guard). The silk is light enough to use daily to give you shine while maintaining bounce. It’s perfect for roller sets and I love the smell! The Heat protectant is water based so you get more bang for your buck and it is so far-so good. I don’t use irons in my hair often, but when I do, its nice to know I am protected. I noticed the stylists in my salon using Chi products and every head that leaves that salon looks fab. The only downfall here is that I can’t really afford the iron. The products are cheap but I find that the cost is minimal since these items will seemingly last me a long time. The great thing about Chi products is that I can find them in my neighborhood drug store or grocery store.

Since May 2006 I have been very select about using direct heat. I recently started getting my hair roller set at the salon. After being roller set, I get my roots blown out with a round brush and blow dryer. This is great for long stretches. I limit my visit to the salon to once a month. So being the “Uncle Pennybags” that I am, I decided to go out and get a round brush to try to copy this style at home. I found that I am not nearly as coordinated as I goosed myself up to believe. Needless to say, I did away with the round brush. Then after 2 months of struggling with the round brush and dryer, I found the Conair Hot brush. This thing blows like a dryer (but not as hot) and there is a cool shot button too. This tool fits well in your hand and takes a two-tool job down to one. It’s much easier to handle and now I can blow my own roots straight. If only I thought of this sooner! Only beef here is that the small attachment is not boar bristles like the larger brush attachment. I like using the small attachment for my nape and edges but I won’t risk using plastic bristles. A great add on to this tool is the Revlon-T Studio hot rollers. I can wear my hair straight all week and then use the hot rollers on the weekend to go curly or to give my hair body before saran wrapping (yes I have been know to saran wrap dirty hair by hot rolling first). This saves time when you don’t want to go through your whole hair routine to get the look you desire. The hot brush retails for around $10-15 depending on the style you get and the Hot rollers retail for about $25 and can be found at any major retailer (Target, Walmart etc).

I’m gradually getting my workout routine together. I purchase Billy Blanks boot camp but have yet to go through the DVD (naughty me). I did however get something that is both practical and muscle toning. I purchased ankle weights at walmart. I’ve worn them to work a few times and I wear them anytime I walk my dog. I try to take the dog out at least 3 times a week for 15-30 minutes around the neighborhood. I find that my legs feel more worked out then when I get on my Eliptical for 30 minutes. Plus I get some fresh air and my dog gets some much needed excercise.  Only down-side here is that I can’t seem to motivate myself to do leg lifts or lunges in these things. I think I have a mental block….all of a sudden I have a taste for ice-cream…lol..Now I know its a mental block! Retail price here is only about $5-6.

Before the Ped Egg, I purchased Gel socks. I had some a few years ago and they worked pretty well. I paid $9 for some from Walmart and I must say I was dissappointed. Unlike the Ped Egg, it took sleeping in those things for a week before I noticed a difference. I noticed the difference with Ped Egg within 24 hours ( I nearly cracked my head open in the shower because I no longer had my lizard-skin feet to keep me steady). The gel socks were mostly a waste of money, however, lately I have been moisturizing my feet before bed and putting the socks on once a week or so in order to maintain the Ped-egg-icure. Downside: not a standalone product, feet must be pretreated in some way for these socks to do you any good. Upside: they come packaged with a small packet of tea tree oil foot moisturizer, this stuff smells pretty good and a little seems to go a long way.

My old camera finally gave way, so I searched online for a new one. All were pretty expensive and I didn’t want to spend more than $150. I ended up going to Target and finding a cute litte pink camera that had all the specs of my old camera with even more features. I picked up the Polaroid 631 for $99 (price cut). It boasts 6.1 mega pixels, several different picture modes, video mode, 3x optical zoom lens and more features then I could name. I even have the option to add fun frames and audio messages to my pics. The only downside is that there is no rechargeable battery. This thing takes 2 AA batteries. I can easily accommodate because I have purchased a rechargeable battery wall unit complete with four rechargeables. I also have a supply of regular cells in case of emergency. It doesn’t come with a lot of internal memory so I purchased a mini sd card for $19.99 and I can take 500+ pics on this thing  on low resolution. All in all, a great find. It’s pink due to breast cancer awareness and I can’t think of a better charity to donate to by product purchase.

Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker is a sweet fragrance that I happened upon when buying my favorite scent (Chanel No5) at Macy’s. I know, Chanel is expensive but it takes me 2 years to go through 3.4 oz bottle ( I switch interchangeably between most scents including Bora Bora which has been discontinued…) I digress…so I now have 2 sample sizes of Lovely and I had been keeping them in my purse for a rainy day (for touch ups when having to be somewhere after work). The clerk gave me a few in my bag, along with several others. Today, my hubby told me he really enjoys that fragrance and its not at all overpowering like some of the stronger frangrances I wear. I didn’t buy it yet but I plan to. I found this scent online for around $35. That is pretty reasonable and at least I got a chance to try before buying. So ladies, if you have some sample sizes at home, give them a try, you never know what you may find!

Last but not least, I have been trying my hand at new hair clips, clamps, claws etc. My hair is finally a respectable length so I am happy to try new little hair trinkets to keep my styles fresh. As some of you may or may not know. I have been in love all over again with banana clips. I was so used to fitting all my hair in a big banana clip that I didn’t even consider half up-half down styles or small banana clips. I was able to find some in a few different stores and I am loving these clips. The closure is a lot better than traditional clips. Only downfall here is that these things pull your hair back tightly. You’ll have to play around with them in order to wear them comfortably the entire day. The first few times, I had to remove them and adjust them to my liking. Retail is $3-5 for a package of 3 (black, brown, white). Some more adorned types retail for upwards of $15-20 but they are worth it if you want to dazzle up your do.

So now that you know what I tried….lets discuss my wish list for 2008. I really want a salon quality dryer. The Pibbs is probably the best value for my dollar but the price tag is hefty. I would prefer to get a more reasonably priced dryer with simailar features. The dryers in my salon aren’t Pibbs yet they do a great job. I found a few on amazon.com that are just what the doctor ordered, retail price $125.

While searching online, I came across “clip on bangs”. Now to most naysayers this sounds like a bad idea. I disagree. Clip on bangs allow you the freedom and versatility to have bangs one day and chin length layers the next. It has taken me 2 years to grow out my bangs. I don’t want to sacrifice them for a style. Most people argue that you can sew in tracks in front for the same effect. I don’t have time to sew in tracks so for me clip-on is the next best thing. I see these advertised for $20-50 onlline. I plan to get a few tracks and some wig clips to make them myself. If the cost of the clips, tracks and thread exceed $20 then I will contemplate purchasing online. My final wish list item is a Chi for Fhi iron. I know they are expensive but I really don’t want to risk my length on a cheap iron with hot spots and ceramic coating. I’ll keep on trucking with what I have for now but if I run across a deal….lets just say I will be one happy girl!

“Seasick”….

Posted in African American Hair with tags , , , , , , , , on March 30, 2008 by Mrs. Raines

It’s been 4 months and change since my last relaxer. Realistically, because I texlax, the last relaxer wasn’t really all that relaxed. I’m enjoying the waves and how they feel but am anxious to see my progress. Lately, I have been cowashing and rollersetting. I still keep up with my deep conditioning and I am thoroughly enjoying going to the salon once a month for a blowout. I think my hair would be great natural but I love the versatility of relaxed/texlaxed hair. I don’t want it bone straight but I want to keep my styling options open.

The last time I checked my length, I was somewhere between 17 and 18 inches. After this long stretch, I am hoping to see 20 inches, that will mean 2 more inches to bsl! With all this new growth, its hard to say where my hair will end up. I am staying optimistic. I get discouraged from time to time but have found that it helps me to look at old hair pictures from 2 years ago, when I first started down this path. I’ve had so many ups and downs but I am truly pleased with my progress thus far and plan to continue. Looking at my progress pictures is therapeutic and it completely opened my eyes. I plan to stretch this relaxer until May….That could change like the wind because at this point, I am indeed fickle… :-)
